Anxiety

From feelings of restlessness, irritability or an impending sense of doom to dizziness, shaking or full-on panic attacks; anxiety can be characterised by many psychological and physical symptoms. These may affect our lives in all manner of undesirable ways from a mild response to something that becomes life limiting.

Depression

Depression can affect us in subtle ways that can be hard to spot or it can cause our lives to come to a grinding halt. Depression may also be experienced in a number of mental or physical ways – we may feel in a persistent low mood, find ourselves unusually tearful or experience a continued sense of hopelessness; we may also suffer from poor sleep patterns, lack of appetite or a problematic libido.

Phobias

Some of the more common phobias we can experience include a fear of spiders, a fear of open spaces, a fear of heights, a fear of closed spaces and a fear of certain social situations; however, phobias can exist for any object, animal, event or situation. They elicit a greater emotional and physical response than fears, creating a heightened perception of crisis resulting in a feeling of panic or even abject terror.

PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can occur at any age, with anyone and can be caused by any situation that is either a literal or perceived threat to our safety. We can even experience PTSD symptoms from sufferers we are supporting in our lives; this is known as  ‘secondary trauma’. Symptoms can range from guilt, irritability, vivid event visualisations (flashbacks) or recurrent nightmares* – these will be severe enough to affect our daily lives in some way.

Smoking

The NHS report that 78,000 deaths each year are attributable to smoking. Roughly 2 out of 3 of smokers are intent on quitting at some point in the near future;  about half of those try to quit annually. Few succeed without help. This is in part due to a physical addiction to the chemical contents of cigarettes but there is perhaps a stronger psychological dependence. Nicotine can have a strong effect on our behaviour and emotions; if smokers use tobacco based products to help manage their mood, it can become problematic for some when they try to quit.

Weight Management

In 2018/19 there were more than 11,000 hospital admissions directly attributable to obesity in the UK. 67% of men and 60% of women were described as overweight or obese. 20% of year 6 children were also classified as obese. Falling into the category of ‘obese’ can not only reduce your life expectancy by up to 10 years but it can have serious implications for your quality of life long before this.

Goal Achievement

Our goals are very personal to us. They may be lifechanging events or decisions that we need to take, or simply surviving a presentation in the workplace.  How often are we subjected to the those nagging doubts that prevent us from realising our full potential. We have everything we need and know how to resolve the missing parts, so what is stopping us
